More Aid To Flood Victims: CM

CM Rosaiah reviewed the flood situation in state in a review meeting, and ordered more aid for the victims.

Chief Minister K Rosaiah, on Wednesday, asked the district collectors and other officials to increase the number of medical camps in all areas receiving heavy and consistent rainfall. He also asked the officials to repair breaches of minor tanks and evacuate people from low-lying areas to safer places.

The Chief Minister reviewed the latest situation following heavy rains in some of the districts, with ministers and officials, at the Secretariat. He directed the Chief Secretary and other top officials to be in constant touch with the district collectors regarding the measures being taken to tackle the situation.

Rosaiah also directed the officials to make arrangements of pumping out water from the inundated areas and restore normalcy in the flood-ravaged sites.

Rosaiah wanted the officials to ensure supply of safe drinking water and proper sanitation in all the areas. "Prevention is always better than cure," he told the officials, cautioning against the spread of any epidemic in the rain-affected areas.

The Chief Minister asked the Commissioner, GHMC, and the R&B, Panchayatiraj, to take care of damages to city roads and to take suitable steps to guard low-lying colonies against inundation.

Rosaiah wanted food and water packets to be distributed among all the affected people as well.

As per the details furnished by the Commissioner, Disaster Management, to the Chief Minister, the rainfall as on 6th September 2010 in the State as a whole is (+) 34% [i.e., 698.5 mm as against the normal rainfall of 520 mm]; Coastal region: (+) 49% [737.0 mm Vs 494.9 mm]; Rayalaseema region: (+) 42% [443.0 mm Vs 312.9 mm]; Telangana: (+) 27% [791.6 mm Vs 625.4 mm].

Rainfall status:

Excess: 19 districts and above, Normal: 4 Districts.

Percentage of reservoir levels with reference to gross capacity:

Nizamsagar: 100%, Srisailam: 100%, Tungabadra: 99.4%, SRSP: 99.2%, Singur: 96.2%, Nagarjuna Sagar: 94.9%, Jurala: 82.4%, Yeleru: 82.2%, Somasila: 64.8%

The maximum rainfall was recorded in Guntur district with 83% excess over its normal, while the minimum rainfall was recorded in Nizamabad district with a 0.2% shortfall. The Coastal Andhra region recorded the highest average rainfall of 737 mm as against the normal rainfall of 494.9 mm, with a deviation of +49%. Rayalaseema recorded a rainfall of 443 mm as against the normal rainfall of 312.9 mm, with a deviation of +42%.

All the districts in the Coastal Andhra region recorded excess rainfall - Guntur: +83%, Prakasam: +78%, Nellore: +75%, Krishna: +65%, East Godavari: +44%, West Godavari: +38%, Vizianagaram: +35%, Vishakapatnam: +31%, Srikakulam: +29%.

In the Rayalaseema region, the figures are as follows - Kurnool: +54%, Kadapa: +44%, Ananthapur: 41%, Chittoor: +32%.

In the Telangana region, the figures are - Hyderabad: +57%, Mahaboobnagar: +51%, Rangareddy: +46%, Warangal: +39%, Khammam: +38%, Karimanagar: +23%, Adilabad: +19%, Medak: +14%, Nalgonda:+9 and Nizamabad: (-0.2)%.

Telangana recorded a rainfall of 791.6 mm as against the normal 625.4 mm, with a deviation of +27%.

The statistics of damages by heavy rains/floods from 1st June to 7th September this year in the State are as follows:

Number of Districts affected: 13, including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Khammam, Adilabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Mahaboonagar and Rangareddy

Number of people affected: 1,55,841

Number of people evacuated: 88,505

Number of relief camps organized: 107

Number of people provided Shelter at Relief Camps: 52,638

Number of food packets distributed: 78,528

Number of water packets distributed: 1,36,975

Number of medical camps organized: 119

Number of houses damaged: 21,580 (fully damaged: 5,959, severely damaged: 15,621)

Number of houses damaged, district-wise:

East Godavari: 17,338
Adilabad: 1366
Karimnagar: 787
Ranga Reddy: 652
Warangal: 408
West Godavari: 347
Vizianagaram: 244
Khammam: 240
Nizamabad: 123
Srikakulam: 75

Extent of crops damaged: 2.96 lakh hectares (as per preliminary estimates). Primary affected crops are paddy, cotton, groundnut, red gram, green gram, black gram, jowar, maize, sunflower and sugarcane.

A detailed survey on more than 50% damages to crops is yet to be done. The horticultural damage stands at 6,272 hectares, the number of minor irrigation tanks damaged are 2055, and the extent of roads damaged are 11,175 kms.

681 more villages are likely to be submerged in floods caused by the rivers Godavari, Krishna, Vansadhara and Nagavali, as estimated by A P State Remote Sensing Agency Centre.

Ministers Raghuveera Reddy, Botsa Satyanarayana, Viswarup, Sunitha Laxma Reddy, D Nagender, Parthasarathy, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Chief Secretary S V Prasad, Adviser to CM, PK Agarwal, Commissioner, Disaster Management T Radha and other officials attended the meeting.
