Telugu film actor Chiranjeevi today urged the union government to confer the highest civilian award of the country, the Bharat Ratna, on actor-turned-politician and former Chief Minister of united Andhra Pradesh, Late N T Rama Rao.
Taking to his Twitter account on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Rao, Chiranjeevi said that NTR had galvanized the self-respect of the Telugu people across the world, and had also strived hard for the development of the weaker sections of society.
It would be a matter of immense pride for all the Telugu people of the world if the Bharat Ratna was conferred on NTR, even if posthumously like it was on prominent singer Bhupen Hazarika, Chiranjeevi said.
He added that it would be a matter of even more pride if the award was conferred on the 100th birth anniversary of NTR which is due in two years.
National president of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chandrababu Naidu too poured encomiums on the late leader.
Naidu said that the party founder was a role model for the Telugu people.
He said that NTR would never stop till he achieved his goals.
He made these remarks after paying tributes at NTR Ghat in the city along with his son Nara Lokesh and Telangana TDP president L Ramana.
Earlier, the son of NTR and Hindupur MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna also paid rich floral tributes to his father at NTR Ghat.
Later, Balakrishna, accompanied by other officials and doctors of the hospital, paid tributes to Rao again by garlanding his statue situated in the premises of the BIACH&RI.
