The Balaji temple in Chilkur on the outskirts of the city, one of the most popular temples in the state, will remain closed for devotees from March 19 to 25 as a precautionary measure in view of the spread of the coronavirus.
Temple chief priest Rangarajan announced today that the temple management had decided on the shutdown to protect devotees from the dangerous and highly contagious virus.
"There is an urgent need to take measures in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus before it enters stage 3 in the country. As part of this, we have taken this measure in our temple," he said.
Swami Vaari Aaradhyam and Naivedhyam would take place in the temple as usual, but there would not be any darsanams, and pradakshinams for devotees would be disallowed, till March 25, he said.
He added that special prayers were being offered in the temple for the elimination of the virus and the protection of the people across the country.
