Traffic at the busy stretch of road near the Aradhna theatre at Tarnaka came to a standstill, after a chemical tanker overtuned spilling about 16,000 liters of the chemical Tolene on the road.
The incident led to an instant traffic pileup with the commuters screeching to a halt, fearing harm due to the chemical spillage.
The tanker had overturned after hitting a road divider.
The police immediately rushed to the spot and taking precautionary measures summoned 4 fire tenders.
Osmania university police sub-inspector Shiva Kumar said that his department had experienced a harrowing time, trying to clear the massive traffic jam which followed the incident.
Shiva Kumar said that though there were no injuries due to the incident, and that the thought of chemical burns prevented the commuters from venturing close to the spillage spot.
The police had to call for additional personnel to divert traffic and thus clear the roads for the smooth flow of vehicles.
Tolene is an organic solvent that is used in paints, glues, cleaners and nail polish. Prolonged exposure to the chemical is believed to cause brain damage and birth defects.
