The atmosphere in Old City continues to be tense on Monday following incidents of violence that occured the previous night, informed the police. Several shops, schools, and colleges have been shut down for the time being in order to keep the situation under control.
According to the police, the cause for the violence was the construction of an allegedly unauthorised extension to a temple that is reportedly causing damage to the exterior of the Charminar.
Rumours of a rally to be conducted by supporters of the construction caused the situation to worsen, when members of the opposing community gathered to pelt stones at the former, who then retaliated in a likewise manner.
The police were compelled to use teargas to break up the warring groups.
Caught in the "crossfire" were a policeman who was injured by a random stone, several police vehicles, a few shops, and an ATM.
The police report a tense but peaceful atmosphere in the area now.
