Normalcy returns to rumours-hit Old City
Normalcy returned to the Old City of Hyderabad on Monday where minor incidents of violence were reported last night following rumours of attempt to expand a place of worship adjacent to Charminar.
Although some educational institutions in the Old City remained closed, the markets of Charminar opened by Monday afternoon. The traffic was normal and the RTC bus services too had regular operations. However, mild tension prevailed in some sensitive areas where the additional police pickets have been deployed.
Following those rumours, members of both the communities gathered and pelted stones at each other. The police fired tear gas shells and resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the violent mob. Later, police forcibly closed all the markets in the Charminar and adjacent areas.
By deploying additional forces and intensifying patrolling, especially in the sensitive areas, the police was able to diffuse the tension. Although mild tension prevailed on Monday morning due to the presence of large number of security personnel on roads, normalcy returned within a few hours and by afternoon, the Old City wore its normal and busy looks.
Meanwhile, the City Police has registered different cases related to the incidents of violence that occurred on Sunday night. The police are also trying to identify some suspects based on the CCTV camera recordings of ATM. (INN)
