Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President, N Chandrababu Naidu, who was on a fast since Friday for higher compensation to rain-hit farmers, was forcibly arrested and then shifted to NIMS hospital in the wee hours of Monday morning.
The arrest was the culmination of a 7-hour long turmoil in which police and TDP activists clashed, leaving Chandrababu's son Lokesh, MLC YVB Rajendra Prasad and many others injured.
The TDP chief was shifted to the hospital when his blood sugar level dropped.
A case under Section 309 of Indian Penal Code (attempt to commit suicide) has been registered against Chandrababu Naidu, while a case under Section 353 IPC (preventing a public servant from discharging his duties) was registered against other TDP leaders.
The TDP chief has been on a hunger strike protesting against the government's meagre relief measures to farmers who suffered huge losses due to the recent spate of rains in coastal Andhra region.
Though the government has sanctioned
Rs. 430.98 Crore and other measures as flood relief, Naidu termed the measures as inadequate, and demanded that the government grant an input subsidy of Rs. 10,000 per acre.
The TDP workers have called for a state bandh today, and have gathered outside the hospital shouting slogans, where Chandrababu Naidu is desisting treatment and continuing his fast.
