The Hyderabad City Police arrested 700 activists of the TRS, BJP, CPI and TJAC during the Chalo Assembly rally on Friday.
Those arrested include 45 MLAs, 3 MPs and 3 MLCs.
City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma claimed that the police had used utmost restraint and did not retaliate despite several acts of provocation resorted to by the agitators.
"There were incidents of stone-pelting and vandalism at Osmania University and the Ashok Nagar area of Hyderabad. At Osmania University, when the students were pelting stones at them, the police had to resort to lobbing tear gas shells. In the Ashok Nagar area, too, the agitators pelted stones at the police and damaged police vehicles. To prevent them from indulging in further violence, tear gas shells were lobbed," he said.
The Commissioner described the overall situation in the city as "under control and under close watch." (INN)
