Amid the furore and debate over the Centre's demonetization, Ibrahimpur village in the Siddipet district of Telangana has been declared cash-free, making it the first village in southern India to do so.
The people of the hamlet, adopted by State Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao and having population of around 1,200, have been completely equipped with bank accounts, debit cards and swiping machines, the Telangana government said in a press release.
Ibrahimpur was the first village in Southern India to go cash-free, the State government claimed.
Rao, who represents Siddipet in the State Legislative Assembly, observed cash-free transactions in the village and said that the same would be emulated in rest of Telangana as well.
The State government had recently declared that a pilot project would be undertaken to make entire Siddipet wired with electronic transactions.
This development has proven helpful in promoting the Centre's move for a cash-free (or cashless) India.
