The BJP won two of the three MLC seats in Telangana for which elections were held on February 27, leading to allegations from Congress leaders of a covert alliance between the BRS and the BJP to undermine the Congress.
Ch Anji Reddy, supported by the BJP, won the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar graduates' constituency seat, defeating Congress candidate V Narender Reddy by over 5,000 votes. Malka Komuraiah, another BJP-supported candidate, secured the Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar teachers' constituency seat.
In response to these outcomes, TPCC President and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud today accused the BRS and the BJP of forming a secret alliance to influence the MLC elections.
He questioned the BRS' decision not to field candidates, and said that it was part of a larger conspiracy to weaken the Congress' prospects.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy echoed these sentiments, and alleged that the BRS' decision to abstain from the elections while calling for Congress' defeat was orchestrated to protect its leaders from potential legal actions.
He claimed that BRS leaders had sought protection from arrests in pending cases from BJP leaders in Delhi by aligning with the party.
Telangana ministers Sridhar Babu and Ponnam Prabhakar also labelled similar allegations against the BJP and the BRS.
The BJP leadership however celebrated the election results as a testament to the party's growing influence in Telangana. Union minister and BJP Telangana president G Kishan Reddy described the victories as a reflection of the State's youth and teachers rejecting the Congress due to its governance failures. He also credited the success to the developmental politics of the BJP and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
These developments have reportedly intensified the political discourse in Telangana, with the Congress accusing the BRS and BJP of collusion to marginalize its influence. The BRS' decision not to participate in the MLC elections has been a focal point of criticism, raising questions about its political strategy and alliances.
