In the fiercely fought elections for six MLC seats belonging to the local bodies' category in Telangana, the ruling TRS maintained its supremacy by bagging four seats, and its nearest rival the Congress managed to win two seats.
The TRS won one seat each in the Khammam and Mahbubnagar districts, and two seats in the Ranga Reddy district. The Congress managed to win one seat each in the Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar districts.
TRS candidate Balasani Lakshminarayana bagged the Khammam district seat by a margin of 31 votes. He got 313 first priority votes and three second priority votes. CPI candidate Puvvada Nageshwara Rao got 285 votes - 275 first priority votes and 10 second priority votes. YSR Congress Party candidate Lingala Kamal Raju got 102 first priority votes and no second priority votes. Curiously, 10 members who supported two independent candidates at the time of filing nomination papers failed to exercise their franchise. Consequently, the TRS candidate emerged victorious by a margin of 31 votes over the CPI.
In the Mahabubnagar district, TRS candidate Kasireddi Narayana Reddy won by a margin of 65 votes. While he got 445 votes, the Congress candidate secured 380 votes. However, Damodar Reddy of the Congress managed to win the election for another seat in the district.
In the Nalgonda district, the Congress candidate emerged victorious. Congress candidate Rajagopal Reddy won the seat by a surprisingly handsome margin of 193 votes, humbling ruling party nominee Chinnapa Reddy. Out of the 1,110 voters in all, 1,100 voters exercised their franchise. While 642 favoured the Congress candidate, 449 voted for the TRS. Independent candidate Purushotham Reddy got two votes and another independent candidate Sunakara Mallesh Goud secured only one vote. Six votes were declared invalid.
With this, Congress stalwarts Uttam Kumar Reddy, CLP leader K Jana Reddy and deputy CLP leader Komatireddy Venkat Reddy heaved a sigh of relief, happy that they could salvage their prestige with Rajagopal Reddy's win.
In the Ranga Reddy district, the ruling TRS won both the MLC seats. Patnam Narendar Reddy and Shambipur Raju were elected.
