The Telangana BJP on Thursday strongly protested the "unsavoury" comments made by Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury against President Droupadi Murmu.
Chowdhury called the President Rashtrapatni, something he said he did unwittingly, but something the BJP seized upon with gusto to attack the Congress.
Following a call given by BJP State president Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the party's Telangana leaders and cadre organized State-wide protests and burnt effigies of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
They also demanded the immediate sacking of Chowdhury from the Congress and the Lok Sabha membership.
They alleged that the Congress had always looked down upon the poor, dalits and adivasis right from the beginning, and was not able to digest an adivasi woman becoming President of the country.
"Chowdhury's comments against Murmu are nothing but an insult to the people of the entire country," the BJP leaders said.
At the Exhibition Grounds, BJP SC Morcha activists, led by their State president Hussain Naik, burnt an effigy of Gandhi and raised slogans against the Congress.
In Karimnagar, BJP workers acting under the directions of district BJP president Gangagi Krishna Reddy staged a dharna and demanded that Chowdhury be sacked from the Congress for making humiliating comments against the President.
In Medak town, too, the BJP workers burnt effigies of Sonia Gandhi.
The police took several BJP leaders, including district president Gaddam Srinivas, into custody, saying that there was no permission for the protests.
Similar protests were held in Wanaparthy, Hanamkonda, Secunderabad, Vikarabad, Narayanpet, Sangareddy, Rangareddy urban district and Hyderabad.
