Protesting against the increase in petrol price by almost Rs. 3 per litre, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists on Wednesday staged a unique dharna at Narayanaguda Crossroads, with senior party leaders towing a car with a rope.
Senior BJP leaders Bandaru Dattatreya and B Lakshman attempted to tow a car with a rope, shouting slogans intermittently when they paused to catch their breath.
Wiping the sweat off his forehead in the month of December, Dattatreya alleged that the United Progressive Alliance government totally failed on all accounts. He said that the government had hiked the petrol prices 6 times so far, and increased the burden on common man.
The BJP activists, who were close behind the car being towed, also shouted slogans as if to encourage the party leaders.
They then took an effigy depicting the UPA government in a procession and burnt it at Narayanaguda Crossroads.
With the hike in petrol prices, the prices of essential commodities and other goods would further increase and put an additional burden on poor and backward class people who were already reeling under spiralling prices, Lakshman stated.
The 3 state-run oil firms – Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum - increased petrol prices by up to Rs. 3 per litre from Tuesday night, as part of recovery of losses.
