The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday demanded that the state government convene an all-party meeting to discuss issues related to the welfare and protection of women in the state.
Addressing a press conference at the State BJP Office at Nampally, former Union Minister Ch Vidyasagar Rao said that the there has been an increase in the atrocities and crimes against women.
To check such incidents, the state government should constitute district-level committees, including both officials and non-officials in the ratio of 50:50, he suggested. He said that directions should be issued to the police station to immediately register a case and issue FIRs when women lodge complaints. He said that the police should hasten the filing of charge sheets in cases of crimes against women.
Vidyasagar Rao also demanded reservation for pregnant women in the buses. Further, he said that maternity should also be covered under the Arogyasri scheme. He said that the word "Nurse" should be replaced with "Assistant to Doctors" as a mark of respect to the women who help in saving hundreds of lives. He claimed that as a MLA, he raised had this issue in 1987 itself. He also demanded necessary amendments in Section 498 (A) to effectively deal with dowry cases. (INN)
