A BJP activist by name Srinivas attempted to kill himself by pouring petrol on his body and setting himself ablaze at the party's state headquarters.
He took the extreme step in protest against the recent arrest of the party's state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar by the police.
The onlookers came to his rescue and doused the fire. They later shifted him to the Osmania General Hospital for treatment.
Srinivas is reported to have told the party workers who interacted with him during this process that he would like to meet the party president.
Upon receiving the news of the incident, Bandi rushed to the hospital and instilled confidence in Srinivas. He also inquired about his health condition.
Speaking to media persons later, Bandi said that Srinivas had been working as a BJP worker for a long time, and that he (Bandi) was saddened at the suicide attempt.
He said that Srinivas had sustained 58% burns on his body, and that he was not in a position to talk to his visitors.
He added that the BJP was making arrangements to shift Srinivas to a private hospital for better treatment.
Targeting CM K Chandrashekar Rao, Bandi alleged that the CM was behaving like a monster in the state, sending all those who were raising their voices against his government's "anti-people" policies to jails.
He called upon the party workers to fight against the government in a brave manner, and urged them to not commit suicides.
