BITS Pilani Student Commits Suicide In Hyderabad
A BITS Pilani (Hyderabad campus) student committed suicide at his home on Sunday, apparently in compliance with the last step of the Blue Whale challenge.
A BITS Pilani (Hyderabad campus) student named T Varun, a resident of Sun City in Gandipet and the son of a software professional, committed suicide at his home on Sunday.
Varun is reported to have taken the extreme step as compliance with the last step of the Blue Whale online challenge that he had been participating in for the past few days.
Varun, who came home from the campus hostel on Friday, had remained in his room since the evening that day and was playing some games on his laptop very seriously. His parents had last spoken with him at 10 pm on Friday night, and found him dead the next morning with his head wrapped in a polythene bag which was tied with a thread around his neck.
There was no suicide note.
The police suspect that Varun was playing the Blue Whale challenge for the last several days on his laptop. They have filed a case of suspicious death and are investigating.
For the uninitiated, Blue Whale is an online challenge where an anonymous administrator sets 50 tasks over several days to participants, the last one being suicide. Administrators are reported to seek our vulnerable / depressed young people on the web and invite them to the challenge.
