An Aswaraopeta (Bhadradri Kothagudem district) police Sub-Inspector Sriramula Srinivas passed away today while undergoing treatment at Yashoda Hospital in the city.
Srinivas had attempted suicide last Sunday by consuming pesticide in Mahabubabad. Since then he has been undergoing treatment at the hospital in Hyderabad. However, his condition worsened and he died in the early hours of Sunday.
Srinivas had complained of harassment by the CI Jithendar Reddy and other officials of the police station, and consumed pesticide. However, after consuming the poison, he felt that he could not abandon his wife and children, and called 108.
CI Jithendar Reddy has meanwhile been transferred to the IG's office and an atrocity case registered against him. Four constables too have removed from the police station and are being investigated for atrocities.
Responding to the death, BRS leader R S Praveen Kumar tweeted that a full life had fallen prey to the discrimination and negligence of the higher authorities. He alleged that if an officer who had worked as an SI in seven police stations and was a father of two children was forced to take his own life, there would be a lot of discrimination that was not visible in the department. He alleged that the higher authorities of the police department were hiding the existence of the discrimination in the name of discipline.
"This was shared with me by many policemen from the poorer sections. From time to time, even IPS officers from the poorer sections become victims. Their sufferings are indescribable. I won't tell you their names, but a lot of people know. Even in the case of Sriramula Srinivas, no FIR was lodged till we asked. What answer will the CM give to his family?" Kumar said.
