Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu today launched the Auto Driver Service Scheme, and also announced the introduction of an Uber-like app for auto-rickshaw drivers across the State.
Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs 15,000 has been directly credited to the bank account of each auto-rickshaw and cab driver. In total, Rs 436 crore has been deposited for 2,90,669 drivers across Andhra Pradesh.
The CM said that the scheme provided direct financial assistance without intermediaries or bribes, and that funds would be deposited for any eligible driver who had not yet received them.
Addressing a public meeting, the Chief Minister - wearing a khaki shirt gifted by the drivers - said, "Our coalition government is focused on resolving the people's hardships and implementing welfare programs. Since apps like Uber and Rapido have created challenges for auto drivers, our government will launch a dedicated app for them, enabling technology-based bookings without the need to wait at auto stands. A control room will be established to support drivers, and the revenue generated from the app will be reinvested in their welfare. Additionally, an Auto Drivers' Welfare Board will be formed to secure their future. I urge the drivers to spread awareness about these welfare initiatives."
"Over the past 15 months, our government has worked to bring meaningful change to the lives of the poor and to implement programs unmatched by any other State," the CM added, and reiterated his government's commitment to the well-being of all citizens.
He also spoke about other key welfare initiatives, including the Stree Shakti Scheme (free bus travel for women), Anna Canteens (meals at Rs 5), midday meals for children and the Universal Health Policy offering free health coverage for poor citizens.
