Jagan's Bail Hearing Finally Concludes

The CBI court today concluded the hearing of the petition seeking the cancellation Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy's bail.
Hyderabad | 30th July 2021
The CBI special court today finally concluded the hearing of the petition seeking the cancellation Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy's bail, which had been filed by rebel YSR Congress Party MP Raghurama Krishnam Raju.

The court has said that the judgement on the matter will be pronounced on August 25.

During today's hearing, the officials of the CBI submitted a counter-affidavit to the court, requesting the bench to take a decision using its discretionary powers on the basis of a memo the investigating body's lawyers had filed earlier instead of on written arguments.

While the counsels of CM Jagan and MP Raju have already reportedly submitted their written arguments to the court, the CBI counsel had sought more time to file its written arguments several times already. However, the MP's counsel opposed the most recent appeal for more time - he urged the special court to not grant any additional time to the CBI and appealed to it to sound its verdict on the issue after an adjournment.

Meanwhile, the rather public feud between the two leaders has only escalated. In May, the AP unit of the CID had arrested the rebel MP on the day of his birthday.

The police had gone to Raju's Hyderabad residence where they had taken him into custody on charges of causing damage to the reputation of the AP government. Before the arrest, the CID had reportedly issued a notice to the leader for his "violations" of Sections 50 (2), 124 (A), 153, and 505 of the IPC.

The arrest was seen by many of Jagan's detractors as the CM's way of silencing dissent against his government.
