Youth Commits Suicide

Alleged harassment by a police inspector regarding the issue of official document leads youth to commit suicide.
Hyderabad | 4th October 2010
Tension prevailed around the precincts of Dornakal police station as an angry mob staged demonstrations against the inspector there for allegedly harassing a youth to suicide.

The mob was led by relatives of Upendar, a 25-year-old youth, who was a resident of Mukkalapally village, Dornakal mandal in Warangal district.

According to Upendar's relatives, he had been driven to suicide after being harassed by inspector Surendar Reddy. Upendar had written in his suicide note that inspector Surendar had refused to issue the PMU report of his family members, who had died in the recent floods. The PMU report was required for compensation from the government and Updendar had to submit it before the District Collector.

Upender had narrated the reasons for his taking the extreme step in a suicide note before consuming poison on Sunday.

Local leaders said that Upender had clearly mentioned the harassment meted out to him by the inspector and said that the letter clearly blamed Surender. The local leaders are lending their outright support to Upender's relatives on the issue.

Meanwhile, district Superintendent of Police Shahnawaz Quasim had ordered an enquiry into the case and maintained that Surender was innocent.

Shahnawaz said that inspector Surendar Reddy was in Hyderabad on official duty till September 22nd. He said that Surender was drafted to the State Capital as a part of the security arrangements for the Ganesh immersion procession.

Shahnawaz also said that the PMU report was given to Upender on September 22nd and there was no chance of Surender harassing the victim.

The SP also added that the local politicians were against Surender since he was strict and upright. Shahnawaz added that the local politicians were taking advantage of the suicide of a man who had lost his immediate family in the floods to try and corner Surender.
