The mining operations at Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) spread over 4 districts - Khammam, Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad - were affected on Tuesday due to the day-long bandh call given by trade unions to protest against price rise, violation of labour laws and disinvestment of Public Sector Units (PSUs).
Raising slogans against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's economic policies and the spiralling prices, the miners in Singareni Collieries voluntarily boycotted works.
The labourers observed a bandh under the Congress-affiliated Indian National Trade Union Congress. Following their bandh call, coal production in Bellampalli, Manchiryala, Mandamarri and Bhupalpalli divisions were disrupted.
The labourers urged the government to make efforts for reducing prices of essential commodities.
They also criticised the Centre's move to disinvest profit-making Public Sector Units, terming it a 'sign of inefficiency on part of the Central government'.
The union members also appealed to the government to take steps to stop the violation of labour laws, job losses and contractualisation of services in the country.
