On March 16, at around 5 pm, the victim Abhay Modhani, son of Raj Kumar Modhani, went missing when he was went outside to bring snacks for his family. After searching in the neighborhood, the child's father lodged a complaint at the Shahinayathgunj Police Station at about 8 pm.

Following the abduction, on the same day at around 10 pm the child's father received a call on his sister-in-law's mobile phone from the kidnappers demanding a huge ransom of Rs. 10 crores to release the boy. The family inform the police about the call. At about 11 pm, while they were in the police station, the father's sister-in-law received a call from the kidnappers again demanding Rs. 5 crores to release the boy, and to come to the bus stop of the Secunderabad railway station along with the money.

The police soon discovered the dead body of the child in a carton near Alfa Hotel, Secunderabad, in the night, and also identified the victim's bike, a Honda Activa, in front of Volga Hotel, Darusalam, Hyderabad.

The accused were staying in a room at Hindi Nagar, Goshamahal, and on March 14, watched the 2014 movie Oka Romantic Crime Katha in Youtube. The main theme of the movie is making money through snatchings and kidnappings.

With the inspiration of the movie, in the night itself they discussed and planned kidnapping somebody for ransom. The prime accused told the rest that while he was working with Hanuma Dass at Goshamahal he had struck up a friendship with one Abhay Modhani who was his neighbor for six months and who was son of a rich industrialist. If the boy were kidnapped they would get a huge ransom, and that money could be used to learn dance and act in movies, he said.

They then procured three SIM cards and a new mobile, and plaster. They then did a recce for the victim's movements while being in touch with him through Whatsapp.

On March 16, the prime suspect was waiting for the victim to come out at Ghode Ki Kabar while the other two accused were in the room. In the meantime, the victim came to the Ghode Ki Kabar area on his Honda Activa. The prime accused then stopped the victim by waving his hand and requested him to drop him at his room. The victim agreed.

In the meantime the accused informed Mohan over the phone that he and the child were coming to their room. The child walked into the room voluntarily without any suspicion. He was given a soft drink. While he was drinking it, the prime accused caught hold of his hands and informed him that they had kidnapped him for money. The victim then requested them to release him and gave them the phone number of his aunt to ask for money. Later the accused plastered his mouth and tied his hands and legs with the plaster. After 15 to 20 minutes the accused found that the victim was lying motionless. Then they tried to wake him up, but found that he had died due to suffocation. They were aghast at the development.

The police teams continuously traveled chasing the accused, and finally tracked them down at Behrampur of Odisha and Icchapuram of Srikakulam on March 19, and arrested all of them.
