The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Tuesday removed encroachments from the Jawahar Nagar dumping yard.
According to GHMC officials, about 16 acres of land was encroached upon by people in the last 10 days. The encroachers not only erected temporary shelters, but also constructed a temple, a mosque and a church.
In a joint operation, the GHMC and Revenue Department officials demolished over 700 huts from the site, taking protection from the police department.
Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation) S Aleem Basha said that the encroachers had tried to take advantage of the general strike, presuming that their encroachment would not be noticed.
owever, the GHMC swung into action and removed the encroachment.
Of nearly 300 acres of land belonging to the GHMC at Jawahar Nagar, about 50 acres has already been encroached upon by different people.
Aleem Basha said that cases to evict these encroachers were going on in different courts. (INN)
