Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Wednesday said that the government is contemplating implementing 50% reservations for women in the ensuing local body elections.
Rosaiah was talking to media persons after inaugurating the Mahila Congress conference at Gandhi Bhavan, on Wednesday, where he said that the issue would be discussed threadbare in the next Cabinet meeting before any final decision is taken on the matter.
Reiterating that the government's first priority was the welfare of women, the Chief Minister said the government would continue all welfare schemes and programs launched for the empowerment of women, in letter and in spirit.
Rosaiah revealed that Pradesh Congress Committee president D Srinivas had earlier in the day submitted a memorandum to him on behalf of the delegates of the Mahila Congress, which urged him to make efforts for the implementation of 50% reservation for women in the local body elections.
The Chief Minister said that after the Cabinet discusses the issue, he would then take it to the high command for approval, since this was a party decision. Rosaiah also hinted that things would not be too rosy for implementing the proposal, since there might be some legal hurdles which would have to be overcome.
