Hyderabad | 11th May 2013
The Chatrinaka police arrested three teenagers on Friday, the 10th of May, on charges of murdering an old woman in Maruthi Nagar. The crime was reportedly committed on Thursday, May 9.
According to the police, the deceased - P Sarojini - was a 77 year-old retired government teacher. The police have stated that she was killed by M Venkatesh (19), Katta Madhu (19) and Bonthapalli Durgadas (18), all of whom are residents of Uppuguda.
Police officials say that the the trio had gained entry into the compound of the woman's house by scaling the wall, from the side of the Hanuman Temple near the house. They had, then, entered the main building through a door besides the steps.
The three men (or rather, boys) then proceeded to remove two rods from a window, and entered the room where Sarojini was sleeping. The sounds of their forced entry woke her up, and when she attempted to raise an alarm, the three accused used a scarf to strangulate her.
The police have reported that the accused had broken in with the intention of robbing the house, which can be established from the fact that they took Rs. 75,000, the cellphone and the earrings of Sarojini after having killed her.
The three accused knew that Sarojini had recently sold her house, and that she now lived alone. Taking advantage of the situation, they committed the heinous crime for monetary gain, the police said.
An amount of Rs. 72,000, one cellphone (identified as having belonged to the deceased) and a pair of earrings (also of the deceased woman's) has been seized from the three men.
Two of the accused - Venkatesh (19) and Katta Madhu (19) - were previously involved in a case of theft of Rs. 16,000 from a clinic in the Narayanguda PS limits.
DCP South Zone Tarun Joshi appreciated the work done by the Chatrinaka inspector N Lakshmi Narayana and his team in investigating the case. He was especially appreciative of the fact that the accused men were apprehended within a time span of 24 hours after the crime had been committed. He said that the police officials would be suitably rewarded. (INN)
