Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari informed that the state government was taking measures to set up 17 new degree colleges across Telangana.
Replying to a question during Question Hour in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, the Deputy CM said that mapping was also being done to establish a residential degree college for girls in each of the 10 districts in the state.
He said that the government would provide infrastructure, faculty and staff immediately after the allotment of land for the proposed colleges.
He said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had directed that instead of routine courses, the new colleges should focus on imparting skill development.
He said that KCR was quite particular about girls' education in the state.
Kadiam also informed that there were 178 degree colleges in the state, which included nine aided and 22 women's colleges. 41,600 girls were studying different courses in the women's colleges, he said.
He said that the women's degree colleges in Alampur and Golconda would be operational soon.
Speaking on the issues, BJP MLA G Kishan Reddy reminded that the state government had earlier announced the setting up of a degree college in each assembly constituency. However, no steps were taken in this regard.
He said that several Assembly constituencies did not have even junior colleges.
MIM MLA Kausar Mohiuddin urged the government to start the women's degree college in Golconda at the earliest.
TRS legislator G Sunitha complained of the lack of basic amenities in women's colleges. She also sought complete details on the proposal to impart KG-to-PG free education. (INN)
