He has the distinction of having choreographed 3 Chief Ministers of 2 states.
He was a known figure in Tollywood and Bollywood, and rose to great heights with his dance numbers, but ultimately had to die in penury, just as the end of many talented artistes came. Salim, the choreographer, died at the age of 80 on Friday, according to a delayed report.
Salim breathed his last at Chennai. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
From basic steps to box steps and lock steps to classical dances, "Nrutyam—Salim" remained a constant name on the titles scroll for over 3 decades in Telugu and Tamil films, as well as in some Hindi films.
He choreographed MGR, NTR and Jayalalithaa - the 3 afore-mentioned Chief Ministers - besides ANR, Krishna, Chiranjeevi, Dilip Kumar, and nearly 2 generations of lead artistes.
As a man who knew the pulse of the masses, his numbers were identified with the common man. His songs, group songs in particular, did have a characteristic signature. He was dance director for nearly 300 films, in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. (INN)
