The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved of a distinct symbol for the Indian National Rupee.
With the Union Cabinet's nod for a distinct symbol, the Rupee has now joined the elite group of world currencies to have their own symbols.
Till Thursday, only the US Dollar, the British Pound-Sterling, the Euro and the Japanese Yen had their own symbols.
The new symbol is a mix of the Devanagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R'.
The symbol was selected from among the 3,000 entries received. Its was designed by IIT post-graduate student D Uday Kumar. Uday Kumar will be awarded Rs. 2.5 lakh for his efforts.
Talking to media persons after the Union Cabinet meeting, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said that the government will try to ensure that the symbol is adopted worldwide within the next 2 years.
She said that the new symbol will be visible on currency notes and coins, and efforts will be made to encourage people to adopt the new symbol within the country within the next 6 months.
The Information Minister also stated that accounting and other software, besides computer keyboards, would be redesigned to feature the new symbol.
It is unfortunate that India is always represented with Hindi everywhere. Why not be broadminded enough to position India as a multilingual country and give due credit to other Indian languages also?
It is sad and disappointing to know that the Government is determined not to popularize even a single letter from other Indian Languages. (:-(
