Anti-Ragging NGO To Help City Police

Society Against Violence In Education (SAVE) is the only registered NGO in India against ragging.
Hyderabad | 29th July 2010
City Central Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police Akun Sabharwal on Thursday conducted a meeting with heads of institutions, principals and correspondents of educational institutions, at Kamala Nehru Auditorium, Exhibition Grounds, to discuss measures to prevent ragging.

A total of 84 colleges, represented by their heads and students, participated in this meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, Sabharwal revealed that as a novel initiative, Society Against Violence In Education (SAVE), the only registered NGO in India against ragging, has been roped in to help the Hyderabad police control this menace.

The DCP insisted that the heads of educational institutes give wide publicity regarding the use of the anti-ragging help line (1800-180-5522) and e-mail helpline[at]antiragging[dot]net.

Sabharwal also brought out the responsibility of teachers and parents or guardians to promptly bring any instants of ragging to the notice of police and heads of institutions.

The DCP revealed that an undertaking in writing will be obtained from heads, principals and correspondents of educational institutions regarding prompt reporting of ragging incidents.

It was decided at the meeting that all colleges would conduct a sensitisation programme for faculty and students (both seniors and freshers). It was also decided to form Anti-Ragging Committees with the SHOs of local police station as members.

Anti-ragging squads would be formed in each police Station, and wardens are to be available in hostels 24X7.

It was also decided to allot separate hostel blocks for freshers, and arrangements to be made for round-the-clock vigil, and the need for psychologists in treating this issue.

A notice listing out various punishments ranging from 6 months to life imprisonment were also provided to all members of the attending colleges.

A poster against ragging, developed by the NGO SAVE, was also released on the occasion.
