In a particularly tragic incident, 2 brothers drowned in agricultural well, after the elder one tried to save his younger sibling, at Verraram Village, Maripeda mandal in the district on early Saturday.
According to Sub-Inspector Shaik Adbul Rahman, the 2 brothers Neltakani Bhagath (23) and Neltakani Tilak (20) were students of the MBBS final year and B Tech final year, respectively. They were at their agricultural field on Saturday, Christmas Day.
Abdul Rahman said that the brothers had ventured to their field at around at 8am and were about to let out water for the fields in which their family grew chillies, paddy and ground nuts.
The incident took place when the water pump they switched on stopped working after some time. Tilak ventured near the well and tried to see what was wrong with it, when a jolt of electricity made him lose his balance. He fell into the well.
Bhagat ran to the well and attempted to save his younger brother's life. Neither of the brothers knew swimming. They both drowned.
The scene at the residence of the 2 brothers was too heart-wrenching even for the police officer, whose voice cracked as he gave us the details.
Police reached the spot on getting the information, and shifted the victims to hospital for autopsy. A case has been registered.
