In a tragic incident, a seven-year-old boy was today killed after he fell into a stormwater drain (nala) which was reportedly under renovation, in New Bowenpally's Anand Nagar area, in Hyderabad.
The child, identified as Anand Sai, fell into the Chinna Tokatta Nala while playing in front of his house. The locals reported the matter to the police. They said that they were unable to save the boy due to the high volume of water in the nala.
The police reached the spot quickly and tried to locate the body of the boy with the help of the GHMC Disaster Response Team. However, they did not succeed even after three hours.
Later, they were able to locate the body of the boy in the same area.
Following the incident, enraged locals alleged that the tragic incident took place due to the local authorities' negligence and their "failure" to fence the deep nala.
They said that a girl, Sumedha, was also killed in a similar manner in the city, last year. Her mother had filed a criminal case against the state's Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao, alleging that he was responsible for the death of her daughter.
Firebrand BJP leader Raja Singh also expressed his shock at the child's death and said that the state government was responsible for the death. He asked how the authorities took up the construction of 20-foot-deep drains in front of houses in densely-populated residential areas without taking any protective measures to prevent such mishaps.
The Bowenpally police have booked a case and have shifted the victim's body to a hospital for an autopsy.
