A no-confidence motion moved by BRS councillors against Municipal Chairman D Venkateshwarulu failed to yield a result due to the absence of quorum at the Yellandu Municipal Corporation in Bhadradri Kothagudem district today.
Protesting against the decision of the Chairman, who has recently joined the ruling Congress, 19 BRS councillors served notice to the District Collector on January 11, seeking a trust vote against him.
The council held a special meeting in this regard. However, the motion was dissolved as there were not enough members present to meet the quorum requirement (17 members).
A tense situation prevailed for some time as Congress MLA Koran Kanakaiah whisked away BRS councillor Nageshwar Rao from the venue to prevent him from attending the council meeting. Former MLA Haripriya and other BRS councillors then staged a protest in front of the municipal office alleging that despite the orders of the High Court protection was not provided to the BRS members, and that Nageshwar Rao was forcibly taken away by Kanakaiah, violating the Constitution.
The BRS councillors demanded that a meeting be held once again.
Of the total 24 councillors in Yellandu Municipal Corporation, the BRS enjoys the support of 23 councillors, and one supports the CPI. After the results of the recent Assembly elections, four members of the BRS have joined the Congress.
