According to the DGP, there has been a significant decrease in the number of rape cases reported this year. Compared to 1,291 rape cases reported in 2011, 1,191 cases were reported up to November this year, registering a decrease of 7.8%. Similarly, incidents of kidnapping and abduction of women too have decreased by 12.1% with 1,020 cases this year as against 1,161 cases last year.
However, there has been an increase in the crime against women by 1.8%. As against 22,179 cases reported in 2011, as many as 22,585 cases of crime against women have been reported till November this year.
The cases of dowry murder, dowry deaths and abetment of suicide too have reduced significantly. Compared to 165 cases of dowry murders, 135 cases were reported this year registering a decrease of 18.2%.
Similarly, the number of dowry deaths have come down by 12.3% with 463 cases this year compared to 528 cases in 2011. Cases of abetment of suicide have reduced by 23.4% with 1,001 cases this year as against 1,306 cases last year.
However, there has been an increase in cases of harassment by 4.7% with 10,484 cases this year compared to 10,018 cases last year. As many as 738 women have been murdered this year while the figure was 737 last year.
A total of 3,250 cases under Dowry Prevention Act were registered this year compared to 2,785 cases last year. There has also been an increase of 2% in cases of "outraging of modesty" with 3,821 cases this year compared to 3,748 cases last year.
Cases of bigamy too have increased by a whopping 9.1%. As against 442 cases registered last year, a total of 482 cases have been reported this year till November.
This year, 442 human-trafficking victims including 11 minors were rescued, and 618 traffickers were arrested.
The DGP said that reduction in rape cases was the primarily due to effective policing and prompt action taken against the accused in such cases.
Regarding the dowry cases, he said that several initiatives have been taken, including counseling, to control the menace. He also informed that efforts were being made to ensure that Women's Police Stations across the state were manned by only women. (INN)
