In a major reprieve to several thousands of weavers, the Telangana government today waived off loans of upto Rs. 1 lakh that they obtained between 2010 and 2014, too.
A GO was issued in this regard.
The TRS government had earlier announced that loans from June 2, 2014, taken by weavers would be waived off, but Textiles Minister K T Rama Rao, who announced the new cut-off date today, said that repeated pleas and the pathetic conditions of the weavers led the government to change the cut-off date to April 1, 2010.
With this decision, the number of weavers to benefit from loan waivers will double. And the government would be waiving off Rs 40 crores, giving a relief to a total of 8,500 weavers.
