Hamid Ansari, the Vice President of India, on Tuesday said that the primary responsibility of a citizen was to promote social harmony.
Ansari was addressing the gathering at the 12th Convocation of the University Of Hyderabad, where he said that social harmony was required in a diverse society like India to attain all-round development.
He exhorted citizens to adopt a proactive rather than a passive approach to promote fraternity among the citizenry and to infuse a spirit of seeking justice.
The Vice President said that educational institutions shape not only the students, but also the nation. He called upon those whp were highly educated, to shoulder a bigger responsibility of promoting the spirit of brotherhood, and thereby, social harmony.
He said that with education comes the responsibility of promoting humanism and working for the harbouring of scientific temper in individuals.
Ansari also said that the more educated must strive for excellence in all levels of individual and collective activity. He urged students to remember their rights and duties, and to always reiterate their commitment to uphold these duties.
