Smriti Irani Urges UoH Students Not To Get Misled

The Union Minister expressed grief at Rohith Vemula's suicide, and appealed to the students not to fall prey to the politics of the Opposition parties.
Hyderabad | 20th January 2016
Union Minister for Human Resources Development Smriti Irani today said that it was unfortunate that a University of Hyderabad student Rohith Vemula had committed suicide, and appealed to the students not to fall prey to the politics of Opposition parties.

Speaking to the media in Delhi, the minister expressed concern that leaders were talking about the incident without ascertaining the facts.

She said that the mother of Sushil Kumar, the ABVP leader who was attacked on the UoH campus, had approached the High Court on August 4 last year. Upon the direction of the High Court, the University authorities had set up a committee, and on the basis of the committee's report, action had been taken against the students.

Irani also said that the High Court had even refused to stay the action taken by the UoH authorities against the students. Therefore, the incident should not be taken as an issue between dalit students and other students, she added.

This kind of incident was not new in the UoH, she said, adding that Congress MP V Hanumantha Rao had also written a detailed letter about the situation in the university earlier.

"VHR had mentioned in his letter about the suicides of seven students of the university, encroachment of university land and misappropriation of university funds. What union minister Bandaru Dattatreya wrote was a similar letter about the situation in the University as Congress MP VHR did earlier," she stated.

Irani said that a two-member fact-finding committee, which had visited the university, would submit its report this evening. She appealed to the students not to give a political color to the incident. She also pointed out that Vemula, in his suicide note, neither mentioned the name of any person nor held anybody responsible for his death.
