The Andhra Pradesh State Reorganisation Bill 2013 has been cleared by the Union Cabinet, and the Bill will now go to the President and then to the Parliament.
However, the Cabinet has not agreed to make Hyderabad a Union Territory. The Congress wants to make Hyderabad a shared capital for the next 10 years.
The move came about in the wake of the Centre trying to push forth the legislation before the session ends on Feb 21. Legislators from the Seemandhra region have been opposing the Centre's intention to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh all along, and CM Kiran Kumar Reddy has been vehement in saying that splitting the state for electoral gains would be disastrous.
Also, the AP Assembly recently rejected the Bill, with over 9,000 amendments sought.
Telangana Congress leaders, however, have been expressing confidence that the Bill would be passed in Parliament, and that a new Telangana state would be a reality.
