The Hyderabad police have arrested two persons, Gulab Mustafa and Abdul Fazil, for allegedly assaulting a senior pediatrician, Dr Michael Aranha, in Himayatnagar two days back.
However, the arrested men alleged that the doctor had misbehaved with a woman resulting in the incident.
According to the police, the incident happened on Friday evening when Mustafa and his wife approached Dr Aranha's clinic to seek some advice for the child's diet (they did not take the child along).
Mustafa claimed that the doctor had misbehaved with and winked at his wife during the consultation, a charge which the doctor denies. After the couple left, Mustafa returned with his cousin Fazil and beat up the doctor badly.
The doctor sustained rib fractures and a lung injury due to the beating up, and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Following a complaint lodged by the doctor, the police registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the Telangana Medical Service Persons and Medical Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damages to Property) Act, after which Mustafa and Abu Fazil were arrested.
Police said that they were registering a case against the doctor as well following a complaint made by the wife of Mustafa.
Meanwhile, the twin cities wing of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) condemned the attack, and said that private clinics, nursing homes and a few corporate hospitals had shut down outpatient services for paediatric cases for 24 hours in the state capital today in protest against the attack.
