Tribals from Chintapalli mandal killed 3 Maoists in retaliation to the death of a person near Balpam village on Sunday.
CPI (Maoist) of Korukonda Area Committee, led by Sindri Chinna Ranga Rao alias Sharath (DCM), Anand (DCM), Korra Nageshwara Rao (militia of Gillebanda village), Palas Ganapathi (militia of Sabbapalli village) and two other militia members, abducted Jagganna Dora Simhachalam and Gemmili Sanjeeva Rao in Erradibbalu village when the duo were on their way to Boddala Veedhi, G Madugula mandal.
Simhachalam is a local spiritual leader and native of Boddala Veedhi, while Sanjeeva Rao (39), a Kondu tribal from Veeravaram, was his follower.
Sanjeeva Rao was fired upon with an AK-47 by Anand near Balpam village, and died.
As the news of Sanjeeva Rao's killing spread, 200-300 villagers gathered from nearby villages and obstructed the Maoists, asking them to free Simhachalam.
The Maoists then warned people to leave the area and allow them to head for Korukonda village for holding a Praja Court to execute Simhachalam.
This was when the mob became uncontrollable and surrounded the Maoists. The Maoists, in turn, aimed their guns at the villagers and warned them to disperse from the place.
Fearing more killings by the Maoists, the villagers pounced upon them, snatched and damaged their weapons, and stoned them to death.
In the incident, the Maoists who died were Sindri Chinna Ranga Rao alias Sarath, DCM of the Korukonda Area Committee; Korra Nageshwara Rao of Gillebanda village; and Palas Ganapathi of Sabbapalli Village, a hardcore militia member of the Galikonda Area Committee.
Anand and two other militia cadres managed to escape.
Police secured the bodies of Sarath and Gemmili Sanjeeva Rao. The body of Palas Ganapathi was taken away by his family members, and the body of Korra Nageswara Rao was washed away in the nearby stream. The police are yet to secure these two bodies.
The AK47 rifle of Sarath, which was snatched by angry tribals, was badly damaged. (INN)
