The State government has decided to supply 5 kgs of free rice to ration-card holders from today.
Every person enrolled on a ration card will get an extra 5 kg of rice till December of this year.
This was revealed by State Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar.
The minister said that there was a delay in the distribution of the 5 kg free rice due to modifications made in the computer software concerned.
He said that 5 kgs of free rice was being given by the union government under its PMGKAY scheme, but that that scheme would benefit only 54.48 lakh people in the State, and that the State government had decided to extend the scheme to another 92 lakh people not covered by the union government scheme by footing an additional burden of hundreds of crores.
Kamalakar also said that the KCR government had not only distributed Rs 1,500 to each card holder and Rs 500 to each migrant worker in the State during the pandemic, but had also distributed 10 kgs of free rice to every poor person and migrant worker for two months.
