Reiterating that the Congress was not against the formation of smaller states, the All India Congress Committee's official spokesperson, Shakeel Ahmed, stressed on the importance of formulating a unanimous opinion on the formation of separate states.
Shakeel Ahmed told media persons that all regional parties in AP should meet on a common platform, and take a unanimous and concrete decision on the formation of a separate Telangana state.
"If the parties have different views on the statehood, it will be difficult for the centre to take a firm decision," he pointed out.
The party spokesperson said that the Congress would take a final decision on the formation of a Telangana state only after the submission of the Justice B N Srikrishna Commission's report.
Shakeel Ahmed also expressed doubts on the commitment of TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao towards the formation of a Telangana state. He alleged that KCR has raised the issue of a separate state only to strengthen his political bearings, and that he wants derive maximum mileage from the issue.
When asked about the 11 Congress MPs who have launched an
indefinite hunger strike demanding the lifting of police cases on students, Ahmed said that the person best suited to talk about the issue was the party's in-charge of AP affairs, M Veerappa Moily.
