TRS Condemns Police Action

Telangana Rashtra Samithi leaders met Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and condemned police excesses on students at Osmania University.
Hyderabad | 7th January 2011
Leaders of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Friday condemned the alleged police repression on students in the Osmania University campus, and in Warangal.

Speaking to media persons at the state Secretariat on Friday, the TRS leaders also demanded that the government immediately lift curbs on the media including on electronic channels.

The TRS leaders had earlier met Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and urged him to issue orders for vacating the police forces including the paramilitary forces from the university campus as the forces could not enter its precincts without the permission of the Vice-Chancellor.

Calling the censor on the media and alleged police excesses as undemocratic, the TRS leaders asked the Chief Minister to issue specific instructions to the police.

They also alleged that police indeed had fired on the students and claimed that residents in the adjoining areas had given testimonies that such an incident had taken place.

TRS Floor Leader Etala Rajender and 3 of his colleagues spoke to the media.

They said that a war-like atmosphere prevailed in the university campus and the TRS had protested against this before the Chief Minister.

They said that they had urged Kiran Kumar Reddy to ensure that such an event was not repeated in the future.

They demanded that a Peace Committee be called to visit the Osmania campus and Kakatiya University to take a decision on the armed forces.

Stopping the media from showing the protest is a pathetic decision taken by government. Without any eye on police by national and local media, police would do whatever they want. Tomorrow one cannot even protest for price rise, or scams or that matter anything. Is there any democracy left in india?
