All the five candidates fielded by the ruling TRS in the Telangana MLC elections for seats under the MLAs quota have won.
The election was held for six vacancies in the Telangana Legislative Council on Monday.
The sixth seat was won by the Congress nominee Akula Lalitha who polled all the 18 votes of that party.
TDP candidate Vem Narendar Reddy lost the election. While five votes were cast for the NOTA option by the TDP-BJP combine, it was not known whether the NOTA votes were cast by BJP or TDP members.
The victorious new MLCs are Kadiam Srihari, Tummala Nageshwara Rao, B Venkateswarlu, Neti Vidyasagar Rao and K Yadava Reddy of the TRS, and Akula Lalitha of the Congress.
Though the ruling TRS had strength enough to win only four MLC seats, party supremo and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao took the MLC polls as a prestige issue and fielded a fifth candidate, and spared no efforts to win the fifth seat too.
KCR had even threatened to dissolve the Assembly and go in for snap polls if any of his candidates lost the election.
His strategy worked and all his nominees won.
On Sunday night, TDP MLA Revanth Reddy was trapped by the ACB while he was offering Rs 50 lakhs as the first installment of a total amount of Rs 5 crores to nominated MLA Elvin Stephenson to vote for the TDP candidate.
There are 120 members in the Telangana Assembly, including one nominated MLA. Of them, the two members of the Left parties kept away from the poll. The remaining 118 members, including the disgraced Revanth Reddy, exercised their franchise. (NSS)
