In another blow to an already-weak Congress in Telangana, party leader and former MLA Kuna Srisailam Goud today resigned from the party. He reportedly informed the party of his decision through a letter he sent to TPCC head N Uttam Kumar Reddy.
In his resignation letter, Goud said that he was also resigning from the post of DCC President of Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that he had worked in the Congress for many years, but had been neglected by the party's leadership over and over again.
He then slammed the party's high command for
failing to appoint a new TPCC head after the
resignation of the incumbent head, N Uttam Kumar Reddy, and said that this was the result of the infighting that was eroding the party.
The former MLA also said that the Congress' alleged failure to be an effective Opposition party had made him lose faith in its ideals and ways of functioning.
Apart from Goud's acerbic criticisms, what makes matters worse for the Congress is the fact that the leader will, in all likelihood, join the BJP.
If rumours are to believed, Goud had met BJP leader D K Aruna on several occasions in the past few days to facilitate the switch. Further, he flew down to the national capital this morning, many believe, to formally switch over to the saffron fold.
BJP state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar and Aruna flew to Delhi yesterday.
Last month, Munugode MLA and Congress leader Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy had also left the party shocked after he announced his
intention of joining the BJP soon. He has not, however, taken any steps in this direction since.
The Congress currently has just six MLAs in the 119-member Assembly. Though the party had won 19 seats in the 2018 Assembly elections, 12 leaders have defected to the TRS since.
