The Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Prakash Karat, on Wednesday, sought the Prime Minister's intervention to resolve the Telangana statehood issue.
In a press statement, he said that the government should resolve the statehood issue based on the Srikrishna Committee Report.
"The government should not drag the issue further and test the patience of Telangana people," he stated.
After stating that the CPI (M) will contest the elections in 5 states, he said that the party will strike an alliance with smaller parties in the respective states.
Further, he said that they will contest 18 segments in Uttar Pradesh, 9 segments in Punjab, 6 segments in Uttarakhand and 2 segments in Manipur.
He said that the CPM would launch a nation-wide agitation against permitting Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in the retail sector.
In response to the Lokpal bill, he said that the institution of Lokpal should be freed from the government, and that instead, the Supreme Court should have the power to suspend the members in Lokpal.
"The Lokpal should be able to conduct investigations independently without interference from the government," he stated. (INN)
