The Telangana Industries Association has called for a 48-hour bandh for all industries located in the Telangana region from Sunday midnight, in support of the ongoing Sakala Janula Samme, or the "people's general strike".
According to the Association's president Sudhir Reddy, over 10,000 medium and small enterprises will remain closed for 2 days from Monday onwards.
Lakhs of employees engaged by these industries will participate in the agitation demanding statehood for Telangana.
However, the Federation Of Andhra Pradesh Chambers Of Commerce & Industry (FAPCCI) has opposed the bandh call.
FAPCII president V S Raju said that the industry-representative body has always opposed bandhs of any nature.
"FAPCCI has appealed to all concerned and also to political parties several times that no disturbance or obstruction to industrial and economic activity or stoppage of work in industries and commercial establishments should be caused whenever bandhs are called as such obstruction or stoppage would entail heavy loss of jobs and hardships to employees in particular, and to people in general; enormous loss of production; dislocation of supply chain; and loss of investors' confidence," he said.
FAPCCI has appealed that industrial and economic activity should be allowed to function without hindrance, and that precious jobs, both short-term and long-term, are saved. (INN)
