The Union Ministry of Law and Justice today issued a circular announcing the appointment of the new Telangana High Court Chief Justice, and the transfer of current Chief Justice R S Chauhan who was made the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
Delhi High Court Judge Justice Hima Kohli was picked for the post.
The appointment is of historic importance as Kohli is the first woman Chief Justice in the history of the two Telugu-speaking states.
Kohli was born on September 2, 1959. After completing her schooling in Delhi, she pursued an MA in history and then a law degree. She became an advocate in 1984, and went on to serve as a standing counsel for the Delhi Municipal Council in the Delhi High Court between 1994 and 2004. She also worked as a member of the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA). Following this, she was appointed as an additional judge in the Delhi High Court on May 29, 2006.
She has also been serving as the Executive Chairman of the DSLSA since May 20, 2020, and as a member of National Law University Governing Council since June 30, 2020.
