Information Technology Minister K Tarakama Rao on Wednesday said that the State government was firm on waiving off the weavers' loans up to Rs 1 lakh each.
Speaking to media persons, KTR said that the TRS government would waive off the loans of the weavers, and that it would cost the State's exchequer nearly Rs 15-20 crores.
He said that there were nearly 50,000 people associated with about 36,000 powerlooms in Telangana, and that the government was taking all possible measures to support the weavers in the State.
KTR informed that the Centre had been requested to establish Mega Powerloom Clusters in Sircilla, and that efforts were on to modernise the power looms in Gadwal, Pochampally and other handloom centres in the State.
Meanwhile, Handloom Development Commissioner Dinesh Kumar informed that last year handlooms had a record export of Rs 2,300 crores, and that this year the target had been enhanced to Rs 2,500 crores. (INN)
