In a major reprieve to the weaver community in the state, the Telangana government has decided to waive off loans upto Rs 1 lakh per weaver.
The government will repay the loans of handloom and powerloom workers taken between Jan 2014 and March 2017, spending about Rs 15.75 crores for the exercise.
The modalities in this regard are done, and the government has reportedly issued orders to this effect.
According to estimates, about 2,467 handloom weavers and 1,018 powerloom workers in the state will benefit from the move.
IT and Textiles Minister K T Rama Rao had recently promised to waive off these loans, and the government appears to be coming through on the promise. KTR is said to have asked the officials to take immediate steps in this regard.
