The Telangana Congress held a demonstration today at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Gandhi Bhavan, to protest the gangrape and murder of a 50-year-old woman by three men, including the priest of a temple, in western Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district on January 3.
The woman, an Anganwadi worker, had gone to a temple in Badaun's Ughaiti area, where she was raped and murdered.
Party workers raised slogans against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and union Minister for Women and Child Developments Smriti Irani.
They also demanded that both the office holders hand in their resignations immediately, claiming that they had failed to protect the women of the state from such heinous predatory behaviour.
"Yet another brutal incident of rape, after the Hathras case, has occurred in UP recently. This shows the clear failure of the state administration in taking any effective steps to reduce such incidents. It is shameful that the CM's much-hyped 'Mission Shakti' has also fallen flat, and has not been able to improve the status of women in the state," the protestors said.
TPCC General Secretary and Medak DCC head Uzma Shakir was among the leaders who participated in the protest.
Congress leaders all over the nation have expressed their anger against the UP government after the incident, and have demanded that Yogi Adityanath issue an apology to the women of the state for "betraying" them repeatedly.
